Theme : A glittery Christmas

The President in his address suggestedthat every meeting day should be like Christmas where we rejoice ( Word of theday ) whenever we come to meetings tomeet up with members and guests.

We rejoice when members complete theireducational goals or take up leadership roles, or even when new members take uproles for the first time at meetings.

Total of 38 people including members and guests attended this meeting

The Toastmaster of the Evening was ACSChan Siew Peng and Region 14 Marketing Advisor and Past District Governor DTM Dr. Arul was the General Evaluator.

In his Invocation ACG Lee Wei Seongreminded us not to be concerned about the price of the gifts received but thegesture that will go a long way to touch someone’s life.

Vice President of Membership and CharterPresident DTM Tham Chee Wah conducted the Induction of new members. The newmembers present were Jacklyn Hoi, Calvin Cheah, Ernie Lui, Jeff Poon and MartinHen.

Ernie Lui spokebrilliantly on “ Pursuit of Happiness “ and Chooi Kum Ying held us spelt boundon

“Taking Life Seriously ”.

ACS Foong Weng Tuck took us on a nostalgicjourney of his hometown Ipoh

SK Khor gave an emotional ‘Accepting an Award speech “ as the Volunteer of the year. In real life heactually won such an award in 2006.

December Babies

ATMS Yip Wah Pung gave us his personalstrategy on “ Planning for a Married Life “ which left us in stitches. Headvised us that to get married we must plan for it to happen, just liked hedid, every little step of the way. He bagged the Best Speaker ribbon, and hisevaluator DTM Tham Chee Wah was voted the Best speech evaluator. Wonder if thatwas planned too.

Calvin Cheah and Jeff Poon took up theAH counter and Time Keeper roles respectively for the first time. Well done.ACS Ivan Ho was the grammarian and busy photographer.

Chooi Kum Ying won the Best GlitteryDressed Award.

The food and ambience at Mage was wonderfulwith a Christmas tree at the speaking area to complete the setting. In thespirit of Christmas there was an exchange of gifts.

Wordof the Day – Readiness.

Thisis an extra meeting organised to cater to our members who needed speaking slots.Twentytwo people attended this meeting including 6 guests.

Area Governor B5 and Immediate Past President ACS Nancy Liew brilliantly sailed us throughthe meeting as the Toastmaster of the Evening.

Area Gov G4 and President of MASMelor Toastmasters club, ACS Thiagarajah presided as the General Evaluator.

Meetingwas brought to order by TM Iylia Roslan ( First time ASA ) .

CCDinesh Krishnan provided an array of thought provoking topics as the TableTopics Master ( his first time ).

We had two guests ( Rizal and Shirley ) whoparticipated in the Table topics session and Shirley was voted as the BestSpeaker.

Goodole Uncle Foong ( ACS Foong Weng Tuck ) gave us some hilarious anecdotes on ‘ghosts and the 7^th month of the Lunar Calendar during the HumourSegment.

Ournew member Jeff Poon in his ice breaker speech “ My Life Journey Till Today ”,revealed that he was born in Ipoh but was raised in Bidor.
Even though he isfrom a tin mining family he learnt to be independent from young. Today he
ownstwo F&B outlets and aims to be a millionaire entrepreneur with theintention of helping others.. He was given the customary standing ovation whenhe was presented with the ‘ First Timer ‘ ribbon.

TMIylia Roasln in her 7th speech gave an inspiring speech on the life of ‘ theGreat Teacher Oprah ‘ (Oprah Winfrey ).

KenyuHo in his speech “ I promise never to set goals again “ advised us to stopsetting goals but start making promises.

He was judged the best speaker for theevening.

ACGLee Wei Seong presented an inspiring 20 minute talk “ An Insight into SpeechEvaluation “.

He shared with us his personal tips on how to evaluateeffectively.

DTM Dennis Wee who evaluated Iylia was votedthe Best Evaluator.

MartinYen who officially joined our club at this meeting manned the AH counter andDTM Tham Chee Wah was our Language evaluator.

Withthis meeting’s assignment as TME, ACS Nancy Liew completed her Competent Leaderaward.

Our club now has 4 DCP goals…..moving towards being PresidentDistinguished Club again.

Meetingwas attended by 21 people including 3 guests ( Finas, president of Maxis TMC, Kevin who came to support CalvinCheah and Area Governor B1 ACS Jess Foong ).

OurVPE ACS Chan Siew Peng was the Toastmaster of the Evening, and she aptly chosethe theme “ Smile ” and the Word of theDay was ‘ Likeable ’.

Our Table Topics master ACB Chen Yien Li intelligently used the theme to create topics for our speakers to respond.

DTM Dr. William Lau ( from MIHRM Toastmasters club ) spoke eloquently on his topic to be voted as the Best table topics speaker.

Hehas been a Toastmasters for many seasons, and he was a member of our club someyears ago. He said it was good to be back after 11 years.

He was our GeneralEvaluator, an experienced one, and it was a delight to observe him in action.

Therewere 5 prepared speeches including an ice breaker speech by TM Calvin Cheah whospoke on his early childhood days.

TMErnie Liu ( first time ASA ) enlightenedus on “ the policy of NATO ”- No action, Talk Only.

ATMS Yip Wah Pung has been watching the womenbehave on tours, this was evident in his Entertaining Speech – Malaysian WomenTourists .

CCArthur Yong spoke in praise of Dennis MacAlistair Richie ……” In Memory of aQuiet Giant ”.

ACSFoong Weng Tuck related a touching story – “ the Old Oak Tree ” and he was theBest Speaker for the Evening. He concluded his speech with his rendition ofTony Orlando’s ‘ Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Tree ’.

Insightfulevaluations were delivered by CC Dinesh Krishan, TM Patrick Lim, DTM PeterSiew, DTM Low Yat Seow and Area Governor B 1 ACS Jess Foong.

Thebest Evaluator was Jess Foong who evaluated the ‘ Poker Face’ ATMS Yip WahPung.

DTMDennis Wee was gracious enough to bring his First Runner Trophy, for therecently concluded District Evaluation Contest, for us to admire.

Our TME DTM Dennis Wee came attired as an Indian Prince to set the mood for the meeting. The room was tastefully decorated and there were candles lit to provide the deepavali ambiance.

It was another Speakers' Night with 7 speeches, and one was a gem to the sense.

TM Angie Ng gave a sterling performance on her 3rd speech -

'A Day without a Maid'

She related her personal experiences with calm and confidence.

TM Jacklyn Hoi(CC2-LZ Organize your speech) spoke splendidly on her diving experience.
She was a picture of determination and confidence.

ATMS Yip Wah Pung entertained us in his usual humorous and nonchalant style on his trip to Mount Kinabalu.

He is a natural strory teller.

We had a rare opportunity to witness CC SK Khor and ACS Chan Siew Peng on a talk show--Communicating on TV. This attracted a very heavy dose of feedback during Open Evaluation

Our best speaker for the meeting was TM Ernie Liu(2nd CC Speech) who enthralled us on how to communicate effectively in his borderless world of different cultures.

ACS Ivan Ho in his penultimate speech for the award spoke of 'Bad Times' for assignment No.5- Speeches by management.

Kudos to all our evaluators who evaluated without fear or favour-CCD Dinesh, Catherine Yong(UniRazak), Jeffery Tang and( UniRazak), ACG Victor Ong, ACS Foong Weng Tuck and DTM Bernard Louis.

The General evaluator DTM Lourdest Chandramohan D(Bangsar TMC) handled the evaluation session with panache and provided helpful tips for improvement..

Our special treat was DTM Dennis Wee rehearsing his Humorous Contest Speech"Best Kept Secret"

The audience had a field day giving their written feedback to help Dennis window in Malacca on Oct 23

Dear All,

Our first meeting for the term started with a huge bang. A total of 42 people attended our
meeting on 14 July 2011, 17 members and 25 guests! Our guests came from all over Klang
Valley, including friends from Klang Bilingual, Standard Chartered and DKC.

It was an honour and privilege to have in attendance our Division B Governor ACB Lim
Lay Kun and Area B1 Governor ACS Jess Foong who was on her official club visit.

The meeting was smoothly conducted by the Toastmaster of the Evening, Immediate
Past President and Area B5 Governor ACS Nancy Liew and CC CL Helen Quat of Metro
Toastmasters club provided valuable feedback as the General Evaluator.

Angie Ng presented her icebreaker speech and she is eager to move on with her speeches.
There was a fine selection of Advanced Speeches by CC SK Khor, DTM Johnson Yike,
ACS Ivan Ho and ACS Chan Siew Peng. Siew Peng who was judged as the Best project speaker of the
evening.

The Best Table Topic speaker was Catherine ( our guest ) and Dennis bagged the Best
Evaluator award.

We had a birthday cake for our July celebrants- ACB CL Chen Yien Li, ACS Ivan Ho and
DTM Dennis Wee.

Thank you everyone for making it an awesome evening.

Wednesday,10 August is our club Humorous Speech and Evaluation contest at 7:30 PM at
the same venue- KDU, Damansara Jaya.

Our next club meeting is on Thursday 11 August and we are looking forward to another
scintillating evening.

We hope to see all of you at D’Utama Advanced Toastmasters club.

Dearest D'utama Advanced friends,

Good afternoon.

I must thank our vibrant Vice President-Education, DTM Peter Siew for arranged the vibrant final meeting of the Term 2010/2011 yesterday.

A big thank also go to the assignment speakers Toasmaster Kenyu Ho, Toastmaster Dinesh Krishnan, DTM Ho Fong Ming, ACS Chan Siew Peng and Toastmaster Cherrise Tan; our speech evaluators DTM Bernard Louis, DTM Dr A Arulnathan, DTM Dennis Wee, DTM Low Yat Seow and ACG Lee Wei Seong; General Evaluator DTM Tham Chee Wah, our dear Madam AG as the Language Evaluator ACB Lim Lay Kun and timer DTM Bernard Louis; our enthusiatic TME aka IPP uncle Foong. The conduct of the meeting eventually came to the finale to my presidency this term with the club's theme ~ A Voyage of Discovery ~.

Let us congratulate our newly crowned Competent Communicator (CC) Dinesh Krishnan, who not only achieved the individual education award but pushed the club to President's Distinguished Club at the right time. Brilliant!! Dinesh!! Brilliant to all the achievers too!

Our Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) was conducted smoothly. Besides having gotten the proposal passed during the EGM, we had elected toastmaster Kenyu Ho as the Vice-President Public Relations for next term. This filled up the vacancy of ACG Lee Wei Seong's earlier resignation. Congrat Kenyu!! Thank you Wei Seong for providing leadership opportunity to newer member to excel!

Dearest members, the ship is about to sail to the shore, please be embarked at the Mines on 18th June 2011 for the last round of nagivation, at a real cruise to celebrate our club's achivements and the conduct of Installation Ceremony as to usher the President Elect Bernard Vincent Louis and his team to the start of new term! Let's invite your friends and family members to this celebration together.

"The 4-hour land-travel from Petaling Jaya to District 51 18th Annual Convention Penang (ACP) 2011 was undoubtedly worthy of visit!

I breathed a sigh of relief as I stepped into the lobby of Bayview Beach Resort, Penang; it was 5 minutes to 9 in the morning. Outside the ballroom, there was a long queue of VIPs ready to be ushered into the ballroom. I quickly greeted one of our Past District 51 Governors, DTM Joseph Gomez who was in the queue, my high heel shoes did not deter me from rushing into the ball room.

This round, District 51 had the honour of our 1st Toastmaster International Vice President, Dr John Lau, DTM launching the opening ceremony in the morning of 30th April 2011, Friday. For the uninformed, Dr John Lau is the First Vice President of Toastmasters International, USA; the first Malaysian ever elected to this office. The ACP Oganizing Chairman Ng SK made the day for all to meet Dr Lau in person!

Dr John Lau, DTM, is a distinguished world leader who has earned 20 rounds of DTM award and spoke with deep-seated manifestation of Toastmasters. He shared with us his family and friends' stories, deciphered the beauty of "Inclusion"; the core of his keynote address inspired leaders who vowed to keep his words!

Our Past Toastmaster International President 2003/2004, Ted Corcoran, DTM who hails from Ireland, is also the author of "The Leadership Bus" and enriched leaders with the 10 things on "I Wish My Boss Would Do..". Those things include the 'big picture', 'support', 'my work', 'direction', 'team leader', 'opinion', 'show me', 'walk the talk', feedback' and 'appreciate effort'. All of us had a wonderful reciprocity during the session.

The morning session continued. Our Past District 51 Governor, Sivanganam Rajaretnam, DTM led the forum by inviting the forum panelists: Toastmaster International President Elect Dr John Lau, DTM; Past Toastmasters International President Ted Corcoran, DTM; Past Regional Advisor-Marketing, Joseph Gomez, DTM and current District 51 Governor Thannimalai, DTM. The forum homed in on "The Future of Toastmasters".

There were a few topics which had been brought up, such as 'New launch of policy', 'Re-branding of Toastmasters', 'Regional Advisor's role', 'Current Toastmasters' progress from the DG's perspective', 'International Convention to be conducted outside US' and 'Quantity vs Quality'. Other questions had also posted from the floor. The session went exceedingly well. It certainly provided great insight into the future of Toastmasters.

Last but not least, the most important thing I must say is a million thanks to the organizing team for having executed the vigorous event! I discovered, I gained and I learned more than before from each segment of the session! I would like to urge Toastmasters who have not attended convention, go for it!!!"

Let us join our Toastmaster of the Evening this time, Toastmaster Chooi Kum Ying.

Toastmaster Chooi had joyful events in her past. Her dreams are her essence of life. She faced degenerate time at one point and found joy missing. But at last, she managed to revitalize life with found JOY. She discovered herself clearly and lives in immensely positive life!

Bernard Louis represented D'Utama Advanced Toastmasters Club at the above-mentioned event. Bernard was the first International Speech contestant and he delivered "In the Driver's Seat" in his familiar style that spoke of confidence and finesse. Likewise in the Table Topics contest, he gave a good account of himself.
When the results were announced, the club should be proud of Bernard because he won honours for the club in Table Topics where he was crowned champion of Area B1. Congratulations, Bernard!

Ahoy! Ahoy! We set sail to a bright journey in 2011. Not only did we usher in the first meeting of 2011 with great speeches and exceptional evaluations, we had lots of fun, laughter and not to mention good food.

On January 13th, we conducted our D'Utama Advanced Toastmasters Meeting in Mage Cafe, Damansara Jaya. We had a nice food lined up for us, from Assam Laksa to Nasi Ulam. It was a different setting, very unconventional. We sat in tables of 4, happily chatting and eating. And when it was time for our meeting to commence, all eyes and attention turned to our Toastmaster of the Evening, Samantha Teoi. She was a cheer to usher in excitement of the meeting and led us through the night with her detailed emceeing.

Thoughout the night, we had Cherries teaching us how to be a model, Dinesh teaching us the A-Zs of golfing, Illya telling us about hop and shared with us a beutiful story and finally Foong Weng Tuck left us all in reflective mode with his speech about Happiness.

This January, we had a table topic session. All in anticipation for the upcoming table topics session .... and for the Table Topics Session, we had the 'Insanely funny and energetic' Dennis Wee as the table topics master. He led us through 2010 with topics on past and present new year resolutions.

Of course, no meeting would be such a success without the evaluators. So good job to alll the evaluators and thank you for making D'Utama Advanced stand out. Thanks to Julian Gan, the general evaluator who led his team of evaluators.

It was a light and fun dinner we had on the 6th December. We invited all the speakers of the Youth Leadership Program for an appreciation dinner. It is D'Utama Advanced treat to those who have helped make this event a success. Once again, a heartfelt thanks for your assistance.

We had great Thai/local food at Canoodliong - Bangsar Village 2. Chee Wah, Karen, Jason, Julian and myself turned up had a a great time laughing and talking about all that happened during the YLP weekend. Ernest, Qin Mei and Hui Shan couldn't make it to the dinner at the last minute due to work commitments.

Nevertheless, you all were greatly missed at the dinner. And oh! We ate your part of the celebratory dessert on your behalf.

An astonishing demonstration by Dr A Arulnathan, DTM!!!

Seminar on "The Power of Your SubConscious Mind"

This workshop was organized by D’Utama Advanced Toastmasters Club. It was held on Saturday, 4th. December 2010, at the Women’s Institute of Management (WIM) Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. We had participants coming from as far as Malacca from the South; as well as Ipoh and Taiping from the North.

The emcee for the event was the suave Past District 51 Governor DTM Low Yat Seow. Just before DTM Dr. Arulnathan ( Past District 51 Governor ) began the workshop, Club Charter President and Advisor of this event DTM Tham Chee Wah gave an inspiring speech on the benefits of joining Toastmasters and the club’s forthcoming events.

“ Life is a Suggestion ” according to Dr. Arulnathan and a lot can be achieved by sending suggestions to our sub conscious mind. He reinforced this by performing Three (3) demonstrations on stage.

First, a gentleman who was balanced on two stands placed at his neck and legs was able to remain rigid ‘ as a wooden statue ‘ even when a volunteer stood on him.

Dr. Arulnathan demonstrated that we too can bring ourselves to that ‘ state of consciousness ‘ . He then became the ‘ wooden statue ‘ lying flat on the two supporting stands, and a volunteer stood on his abdomen.

For the third demonstration, a lady experienced no pain when a needle was inserted into her hand. She was earlier ‘ told ’ that part of her hand would be extremely cold and she would not feel any pain.

The Sub Conscious mind is truly powerful, we can achieve a lot in our lives if we can programme suggestions into our sub conscious mind.

It was truly a fantastic event. It left the audience spelt bound and gasping with amazement.

Youthful experience at the YLP weekend

Last weekend was a great weekend. It was filled with excitement, learning, sharing, fun, laughter and lots of respect. It was the Youth Leadership Program + Direct Imagery.

After months of planning and organizing, the event took place and it was a success. 15 bubbly youths turned up for the program. All of them were prepared and curious, always wanting to learn and all the time ready to have fun. So that is exactly what we prepared for them.

To help me out, I had a wonderful team. Chee Wah assisted so much in the organizing and marketing of the YLP. He was a great mentor to me. Then we also had brilliant speakers who presented on topics that the excel in. We started of with Chee Wah who guided the youth about leadership. Then Hui Shan carried on with how to ’Organize a speech’. Karen Yen spoke on ‘Impromptu speaking’ and got the participants to think on their feet in a short table topic session. Ernest Wong continued with ‘Gestures’ and his session was so interactive that it made everyone laugh. Qin Mei did a session on ‘Voice and vocab’. She got everyone to cheer out loud and the room boomed with excitement.

We ended the day with some individual coaching session on how to prepare a presentation because that is just what the youth will have to do the next day. We started day 2 with the participants presenting an ‘Ice breaker’ speech. Wow! There is talent within them. We then continued with a topic on ‘Leadership skills’ by Jason Moi. He got everyone into a discussion and gave excellent examples. Julian Gan then shared with us on his journey of life and how leadership plays an important part of life. Very well done as the participants were moved to think.

Don’t you think that they all deserve a round of applause? *clap*clap*clap*

Throughout the 2 days, I sprinkled elements of direct imagery in the program. I did a session on goal setting where I asked the participants to draw out there goals. Then I led them through a session to visualize the goals in their mind. The purpose was to let them ‘see it as real’, then they can achieve it better. I also had a session on ‘relaxation’ where they just relax their body and mind and let go of all the tension. It is interesting to see how the participants enjoyed themselves and released all their stress. I also helped them uncover their modalities of learning and taught them how to utilize this in helping themselves remember and study better. I think the elements of direct imagery is a good added benefit to this YLP.

Last but not least, I have got to thank Wei Seong for helping us to source for the venue and helped to cater the delicious food!

The weekend just passes so quickly when you are having fun. Only now do I realize that all the effort that you put in to organize an event like that is well worth it. When you hear positive feedback from the participants, or when you hear ‘thank yous’ from the youth themselves, or even the happy faces on the youth, you feel good about all the work that you have done.

Everyone is having a fun time.

The 1111 Meeting with 101 Session Guest Speaker Mr Enrique Tsou!

Before the meeting started yesterday, the short & quick down pour did not deter us from commencing the meeting 5 minutes earlier than usual. Thank you GE Lay Kun for granted us this credit !

TME Bernard Louis, dubbed the 'Man of the Club' saved the day from an inadvertent omission of meeting program at the begining of the meeting. Each sessions went on without a cloud on the horizon. It was all plain sailing. Great job Bernard!

Our 101 Session Guest Speaker, Mr Enrique Tsou of SWET Advancement Centre enriched us with the gist of Law of Attraction. His immense erudition brought the audience felt the sparks of breakthrough. "What you want, Wants you!" elicited a few members' agreement on finding parking space by using such awareness. The same gist is applicable to people looking for result of a team. And it's not all, the Q&A was set openly and Enrique brought us inch closer again between the Law and reality. The whole 101 session was awesomely awesome!!! On behalf of the club, thank you Enrique for your kind sharing!

After the intermission, here came the the prepared speech session, its variety was the spice!

I was impressed by toastmaster Dinesh delivered a speech titled "Positive Thinking". There were many tips offered by him on how to stay thinking positively, brilliant Dinesh! Next, a profound presentation on "Forgiveness" earned my respect to her, toastmaster Nur Iylia! How many of us could really forgive a murderer, instead of put a deadly blame in the first place which most people do ? Iylia's story touched us. To dim the serious mood after this, uncle Foong entertained us with his startled action, highly animated with self-made sound track on a topic titled "DV -- Dosmestic Violence". It was fantastically done! However, the main focus was lies in his thoughtful substance of the speech and research work. Hence, he deserved the Best Assignment Speaker Award of the night, congrat uncle Foong!

Last but not least, Ivan Ho attempted a difficult project from an advanced manual on 'The status Report about AD Server". He was well prepared with the explanatory slides and use loads of highly technical term in subject. This could be the cause of over took the 4-step pattern (objective, scope, finding and recommendtion) which he was specifically asked to delivery.

The Speech Evaluation Session took centre by our lovely GE Lay Kun with her team of evaluators Sheila, S Subramaniam, Siew Peng and Chee Wah. They gave their sincere and constructive remarks to the speakers not only according to the speech objectives, but also extra food for thought personally. Subramaniam won the Best Speech Evaluator Award AGAIN, 2 times consecutively. His keenness in helping others and spirit of toastmaster is noticeable.

What electrified the ambience more was the positive and long missed clamour during the Open Evaluation. This uniqueness of D'Utama Advanced's was restored with intense vitality, to mention a few supporters eg Dennis Wee, Chee Wah, Dr Arulnathan, Sheila Wong, S Subramaniam and etc. Their spontaneity and witty feedback added weight to the quality of Open Evaluation session, as well as benefits to the assignment speakers.

Overall, yesterday's meeting was one of best that imparted the essence of public speaking practise. Keep going friends!

The Legend, KL is the venue for the Toastmasters International – District 51: 18th Semi Annual Convention (October 29-31, 2010). And on Sunday, the finals of the Humorous speech and Evaluation competitions were held. Here, the Division champions from District 51 converged to showcase their speaking skills either by using humor or focusing on evaluation.

Through the YLP, participants get to learn the many skills required to excel in their future. Joint Area B1 & B2 Humor & Evaluation Speech Contest

In the Joint Area B1 & B2 Humor & Evaluation Speech Contest held yesterday at Taylor’s University College Lakeside Campus, our reps, Chan Siew Peng and Bernard Louis represented our club at the Area B1 contest for Humorous speech and speech Evaluation respectively. There was a grand total of 6 participants in this competition, with 3 contestants for each category.

In the Humorous speech contest, Chan Siew Peng did well, but she wasn’t placed – which was really unfortunate. I believed it was a really close fight amongst the three candidates. With regards to Speech Evaluation contest on Bernard's performance – he is truly an evaluator extraordinaire! Predictably, Bernard Louis was adjudged the champion. And given this victory, Bernard will meet other Area champions at the Division-level contest on September 25. He is a strong contender to win at Division-level – that I’m sure!

Here's a happy ushering new days of September 2010!

First of all, please take note that our Club has postponed the upcoming Regular Meeting to 22nd September, Wednesday, 2010. There will be no meeting held on 9th September 2010 (eve of Hari Raya Puasa).

This round, our Club has a special talk in store for you.

We will have a great chance to listen to one of our senior members Amy Wan-Ratos, CTM, who will be our Guest Speaker for 101 Session of September. She will share with us an edifying topic which closely relevant to all of us, ie the way we express our wants or desires.

Here are few words from Amy *....

"Very often we ask questions that are irrelevant and not connected to the result we want to achieve whether it is about punctuality, sales target, performance standards and etc. In order to resolve the issue, we then proceed to ask several questions until (hopefully) the person gets the message that we want them to have ie: to be on time, to buy my product, to marry me! We also like to say that we ‘counsel’ our employees. However if he does not change his behavior, then your ‘counseling’ was ineffective! This is so frustrating!

Hence, this session aims to change the way we ask questions: from ineffective to results-focused, where the employee even proposes what changes he will make, the customer definitely confirms his order, and she says YES, I’ll marry you!"

The situation sound familiar to most of us and I definitely don't find it enough here. Therefore, let's pen down the date 22nd September 2010, Wed @ Room 1.08, Kolej Damansara Utama (KDU), 7.30pm and get ready to participate Amy's talk on "Effective Questions give the Results you want" !!!

Good evening, distinguished toastmaster, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to D’Utama Advanced Toastmasters Club Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests for the term 2010 / 2011.

We will start off our meeting this evening with the Humorous Speech Contest.

The purpose of this Humorous Speech Contest is:

To provide an opportunity for speakers to improve their speaking abilities and to recognize the best as encouragement to all.
To provide an opportunity to learn by observing the more proficient speakers who have benefited from their Toastmasters training.

Before the contest begins, here are the general procedures:

To be eligible to compete at any level of Humorous Speech Contest, the contestant must be a Toastmaster in good standing of a club in good standing.
Contestants must prepare their own five to seven minutes, which must be substantially original and certifies as such in writing to the chief judge by the contestants prior to the presentation of the speeches (on form 1183, Speaker’s Certification of Eligibility and Originality).
All contestants will speak from the same platform or area designated by the contest chairman with prior knowledge of all the judges and all the contestants.
Speeches shall be from five to seven minutes. Contestants who speak less than four minutes 30 seconds or more than seven minutes 30 seconds will be disqualified.
Timing devices and the timers are situated at the rear of this room. Contestants have been informed of its location.
The green light will be turned on at 5 minutes and remain on for 1 minute. The amber light will be turned on at 6 minutes and remain on for 1 minute. The red light will be turned on at 7 minutes and remain on until the speech is concluded. No audible device, such as a buzzer, shall be used for the overtime period.
Time will begin with the first word uttered by the contestant. However, should the contestant engage in definite verbal or non verbal communication with the audience (including the playing of music or other sound effects, a staged act by another person, etc.) prior to reaching the speaking position and uttering the first word of the speech, the timer shall activate the timing device at that point. If this results in the contestant going overtime, the contestant will be disqualified.
There will be one minute of silence between contestants, during which the judges will mark their ballots.
Protests will be limited to judges and contestants. Any protest will be lodged with the chief judge and/or contest chairman prior to the announcement of the winner and alternate(s). The contest chairman shall notify the contestant of a disqualification regarding originality prior to that announcement before the meeting at which the contest took place is adjourned.
There will be three winners in this contest and representing the club to the Area B1 contest which will be held on 4th Sept 2010 (Saturday) @ Taylor’s University College, Lakeside Campus, LT 7, 1.00pm – 5.30pm

For everyone in this room, please observe a few House rules:

Please switch off all electronic devices such as hand phones, beepers etc so as not to disrupt the contest proceedings.

During the 1 minute silence, you may leave the room but do come back within the 1 minute break, if not, the doors will be shut and you will only be allowed to come in at the next 1 minute interval.

No one is allowed to walk about in this room during the contest; our SAA will be at the door to ensure that no one leaves or enters the room while the speakers are performing.

Humor & Evaluation Speech Contest on August 20, 2010

The Humorous & Evaluation Speech Contest was held last evening and as expected, competition was keen.

In the Humor Contest, there were four contestants, namely, Victor Ong; Foong Weng Tuck; SK Khor; and Chan Siew Peng. All four did their best to entertain us and to get us to laugh. In the end, when the results were announced, Chan Siew Peng was the Champion and Foong was the first runner-up. There were only two winners because one of the participant did not meet the minimum qualifying time.

As for the Speech Evaluation contest, there were a big field of 7 contestants, and I am listing them down in their order of appearance: Victor Ong; Joyce Hue; Karen Yan; Bernard Louis; Foong Weng Tuck; Chan Siew Peng; and SK Khor. The test speaker was from PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Lilian Wah who presented a speech titled “Decision”. And the winners were Bernard Louis (Champion)’ Chan Siew Peng (first runner-up) and Victor Ong (second runner-up).

And so, Siew Peng and Foong will represent D’Utama Advanced for the B1 Area Humor Contest, and Bernard Louis wil represent the same Club for the B1 Area Speech Evaluation Contest to be hgeld on September 04 at Taylor’s University College Lakeside Campus.

Meeting of August 12, 2010

On Thursday (August 12, 2010), ASA Henry Yip used the gavel to signal that the meeting had started. President Nancy spryly took center-stage to give us her monthly address. As expected, she had a message for us. She stirred members' self-awareness on what they want to achieve in the club and in their life throughout the voyage. Then, Bernard Louis took over the podium as the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME), and things proceeded smoothly and quickly.

Guest Speaker Lee Wei Seong gave us an understanding of “Vision versus Power” – we all know he is a good speaker and he was spewing and disgorging fact after fact, that by the time his 101 session ended, most of us needed to close our eyes to quietly digest all that information. I remembered him telling us that it is ‘vision’ that is important, not ‘power’.

Just as well that we broke up for some F&B before we proceeded with our dosage of 4 speeches – two Ice-breakers, one CC speech # 5 and one Advanced speech. Iylia and Cherisse spoke with confidence – for first-timers, they were good! – and then, Victor Ong’s turn, followed by SK Khor.

I personally felt that this time around, the evaluations were painstakingly detailed and dare I say it, hard-hitting even – particularly directed at the seasoned speakers like the last two. It was great to see Dennis Wee and Chan Siew Peng giving honest and gripping evaluations that can only help the speakers improve! This meeting took longer than normal but it was still fun and interestingly enjoyable!

Youth Leadership Program with Direct Imagery- Postponed till December 2010

Yes! You heard it right. This year D'Utama Advanced Toastmasters Club is organizing a Youth Leadership Program. Past participants have mentioned that the previous YLPs were fun, educational and a great event. This is due to the high quality of the course materials, the very talented and dedicated speakers and the execeptional team behind the whole planning of the event.

Through the YLP, participants get to learn the many skills required to excel in their future. From public speaking skills to leadership skills and even building on their dreams, this program, targeted to all Upper Secondary School Children is a must not miss program. At the end of the course, participants will:

• Overcome nervousness when speaking before an audience
• Organize and present ideas logically and convincingly
• Listen and give advice to others and improve their leadership skills
• Able to set goals and work to achieve it

This year there will be an additional boost to the program. We are inviting a speaker to add in the elements of Direct Imagery to our program. If one can see the final outcome in your mind, it will be able to help you achieve it better. If you can imagine yourself 5 years later as a great leader and delivering a 100% presentation, think about what effects it would have on you now. Thursday’s (July 08) assembly was our maiden meeting for the 2010-2011 term. What was perhaps remarkable about this meeting was that we had an equal number of members and guests turning up for this meeting. With a high attendance, it surely set the mood and quality of the meeting!

Nancy’s presidential address was a serious elocution that described her own personal story of her involvement as a Toastmaster: of the time she discovered Toastmasters, her enlivened engagement, the time she hit the hay, and finally her complete metamorphosis into an active and energetic Toastmaster.

The TME was the ever-effervescent Foong Weng Tuck, the Immediate Past President and he did a more than decent job of ensuring that we all enjoyed the meeting.

There were four speakers in total: Dinesh did his Ice-breaker from the CC manual; Victor Ong did his second CC speech “Please end my life!”; Lim Lay Kun doing her Advanced speech from the Special Occasions manual “Presenting the Award”; and finally Dennis Wee who did his HPL Part 1 speech. We did not have Table Topics this time around because we had our 101 Session by our own member, Joyce Hue who did a talk on “Hypnotherapy for Successful Goal Settings”. Overall, it was informative and instructive. Too bad there was no Q&A because she ran out of time.

We saw three members being inducted – Cherrise Tan, Dinesh Krishnan and Nur Iylia. We also appointed mentors to guide them on their initial journey – these mentors are Nancy, Chee Wah and Victor Ong.

It was a crammed meeting, given our rare time-overrun – but like all our previous meetings, it was still a delightful and genial meeting of sharing, learning and experiencing! That is enough for us to want to come back again for our next meeting!

June 19th, 2010 - As Incoming Area B1 Governor Lim Lay Kun officiated the installation @ Barbera Cafe Bangsar Park in the evening, I must declare the ship has arrived for A Voyage of Discovery!!!

Oath is taken. I wonder if this is merely a showcase for the Team to carry out their duties? It's more than that. I found something more priceless.

June 9th, the incoming Vice President of Education, Peter Siew pledged to roll out next term's Educational Program, which is already in hand. June 13th, our honorable incoming Secretary, Samantha Teoi worked her promise, and within 24 hours after calling me, she emailed a splendid Notice and Agenda to the incoming Exco. June 17th, our incoming Vice President of Membership Tham Chee Wah put up a very engaging introductory circular about 101 Session for the next term, in our blog. Those are the few esteemed individuals, who worked beyond self even BEFORE the oath takes place! I call it - the REAL SPIRIT of toastmaster!

The REAL SPIRIT of the voluntary team's contribution for all. It is indeed the REAL SPIRIT that gives a big bang to the new Term! For this, my dear team, you deserve a roaring applause from the floor!

Dear fellow toastmasters, we are spiritual being. Real spirit lies in our soul. It is the health of the soul that brings the true purpose of our human experience. Sometimes, I wonder how we are connected to our soul, and act according to the purpose in life.

Public speaking is one of the effective ways to evoke our UNKNOWN authentic power. I'll never forget how would a serious member spoke like Mr Bean; how would an introvert member sang a song, even he can't believe it; how would a Founder of a successful organization, spoke so eloquently with words of compassion and humility. I really salute those members! They not only have high status in wealth, high status with fame or high status in their business/profession, but they humbly act differently from their norm when they are in club meetings. They are able to cut through the clouds of the ego and attempt to see what is true in themselves, through public speaking.

Dear friends, the desire to achieving our life goal is always there, awaiting DISCOVERY. If we don't let go of how we see ourselves, we will never see possibilities outside ourselves. Learning how to move from our life junction brilliantly, is a step to expressing our own real nature.

Therefore, the theme for next term - 'A Voyage of Discovery' is a journey for everyone of us to reach our authentic power and go beyond to achieve our purpose in life by connecting the soul!

My ship has arrived. My team is well equipped on board.

My ship not only takes in 38 members as listed, but it can take in 83. Do join me, we will sail to the sea to discover our potential together.

Let us come back a year later, by taking THE Voyage of Discovery!

On the evening of June 19, 2010, D’Utama Advanced Toastmasters were in Bangsar (Café Barbera, to be precise) to attend the club’s Installation Nite. Like all our many previous gatherings, the company was exemplary, the food exceptional (especially the lamb shank), and the proceedings solemn. The current ExCo was dutifully discharged (well, in reality they have eleven days more before their term ends!) and the incoming ExCo was sworn in. Foong Weng Tuck and Bernard Louis were noticeably chirpy – knowing they will be standing down as Club President and Vice President Education respectively. They and the others have done a great job this term but it’s time for a new team to take command and embark on “a voyage of discovery”. And equally important, Lee Wei Seong ensured there was a generous supply of red wine to keep us all in the right ‘spirits’!
